Outreach and Ministries we support

We are involved in outreach as well as actively supporting a number of ministries both locally and internationally.

Please see below some of the areas in which we are involved:

Missionary Weekends:

Every year for a number of Sundays between January and March, the church invites speakers from a number of outreaches to give talks about the ministries they represent. Some of our recent speakers have been from ministries such as London City Mission, Friends of China, Sat-7, Spinnaker, Barnabas Fund. On the final weekend the church then takes a collection, which is disbursed to a number of missionary organisations as selected by those donating.

Supporting a Hospital and Schools

One of our long standing members, Maureen Moore, worked in Uganda as a nurse and midwife for over 20 years, before eventually joining the Kagando Hospital where she became the Matron. In 2000, Maureen was awarded an MBE by the Queen for her work.  Following Maureen's retirement, she has continued to make annual visits to the Kagando Hospital when possible, taking both financial and material support (Eg knitted goods) provided by friends and church members. This support continues to make a tremendous difference to many people and families in the Kagando area.

Through one of our church elders Paul Allen, the church also supports Kalikikaliki Primary school in the Kagando area, providing funds for breakfast for the children. Paul has visited the school regularly over the last few years, additionally providing practical support on building extensions and general maintenance work, giving prizes at the schools awards ceremony, and overseeing the use of funds sent.  Through Mr Allen's dedication and with the support of the church, the pupils motivation and the school's overall performance has seen great improvement.

Victor and Loretta Farr's personal outreach and deep commitment to the children in Boscobel in Jamaica has by the grace and goodness of God, had a huge, positive and lasting impact on the lives of young people in the local area. This ministry involves making provision for regular meals for the children, helping to build a church and enabling school facilities.

Working with the Local Community

Additionally, the church is closely affiliated to Grove Vale Youth Club,  a local youth club in Peckham aiming to provide a safe and fun environment for children and young people aged 4-18 to enjoy after school activities during term time. The club is staffed entirely by volunteers, many of whom attend Christ Church, and at some point during each evening's session, the young people get to hear a short story or teaching from the bible. Supporting Foodbanks

Over the last few years, between September - December, the church has also invited the local community to join with them in collecting food and various essential groceries (eg soap and nappies), which they have given to a local food bank. Shoebox Ministry

shoebox
Around Christmas time, Samaritan's purse runs Operation Christmas Child, which is a shoebox ministry aiming to send Christmas gifts in a nicely wrapped shoebox to underprivileged children in Eastern European as well as some African countries. Each year in November, one of our members Janet Collins invites those in the congregation who would like to support this cause to join in with their monetary contributions, to enable her to purchase various items such as colouring pencils, gloves, small toys etc that can all fit into a shoebox. She then wraps these up and pays postage for these to be sent to a UK collection point from where they are disbursed as gifts, bringing much joy to the underprivileged children.

We look forward to continuing to offer our support to the ministries above as well as other new ministries as the Lord may direct.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Hello from Christ Church!

Easter -daffodils

Located on McDermott road, we are 5-10 minutes walk from Peckham Rye Train Station, or 10 mins walk from the Nigel Road bus stop on Peckham Rye ( Buses 343, 12 etc).

Our church is made up of people from all walks of life who have a common belief in Jesus and His love for each one of us.

You may be interested to know that Christ Church McDermott was the site of the first Religious Radio Broadcast to a UK Church (watch re-enactment here), and recently featured on Songs of Praise on 1/9/24. You can view clips of that show on twitter or facebook.

We love to see new people and we really hope that you will feel right at home.
Our Sunday mornings begin with a warm welcome from our greeters and our service begins at 11am with an invitation to join in thanksgiving and praise to God.

Our worship is a comfortable mix of contemporary songs as well as familiar well loved hymns, and we encourage young and old to join together in song.
We look forward to a time of refreshing and encouragement as we put time aside to spend with God and with each other.
